What's an earning strategy?

When your hours are running, your agent puts your money into the exchanges where people swap one digital currency for another. Those swaps need someone to have both currencies ready, and whoever provides them takes a small cut of each swap — that's where earnings come from, paid by the people trading rather than by us or by the shop. A strategy is simply how narrowly your agent aims. A tight aim takes a bigger share of the swaps happening in that price range, but the price drifts out of range sooner and you earn nothing while it's outside. A wide aim earns a thinner slice, more of the time. Active Earner is the tightest, Wide Coverage the widest, and the rest are steps in between. They're five settings on one dial, not five different products.

Do I need my own money to use my unlocked hours?

Yes. The hours are free and the shop gives them to you for turning up, but they're hours of software — not money to invest. You bring your own, it stays in your own wallet on your own machine, and you can start with a small amount you'd be comfortable losing. If you'd rather just watch it work before putting anything in, you can do that too.

Could I lose money?

Yes. Your money earns by helping traders buy and sell in digital-asset markets, and the value of those assets goes up and down — you can end up with less than you put in. Nothing here is a savings account and nothing is guaranteed or insured. Unlocking hours at your local Earn Spot doesn't change that, and we'd rather say so plainly than dress it up.

Whose money is being used?

Yours, and only yours. It sits in a wallet on your own computer, created by you, with keys only you hold. Localmoney never holds it, never moves it and couldn't freeze it. The business certainly never touches it.

A business doesn't give you free wifi out of charity — it gives you a reason to come in, sit down and stay. It costs them almost nothing per person, and it's worth more than a discount because it makes the place somewhere you want to be. Earn streaming works exactly the same way: instead of bandwidth, the business unlocks hours of earning software. No money changes hands, nothing is deducted from their till, and the longer you genuinely stay, the more you unlock.

Money spent locally should stay local, and the places that make a neighbourhood worth living in shouldn't have to compete with the internet on price alone. A high street can't beat a warehouse on delivery times — but it can offer something a warehouse never can: being somewhere. We're trying to make physical presence worth something again, without asking anyone to pay more for it.

How does it know I'm really there?

Your phone checks whether it's inside the venue's area and tells us yes or no. That's the whole check. The area is drawn deliberately generously — about 22 metres — because indoor GPS drifts by 10 to 20 metres and a tighter boundary would turn away people genuinely standing at the counter.

Do you track where I go?

No, and not as a policy promise — as a design decision. The coordinates are used to answer one question in the moment and are never written down. There's no history of where you've been, because it was never stored. A business sees that visits happened, never who made them.

What are the three words on the window?

Every ~3-metre square on Earth has a permanent three-word name, worked out by maths rather than looked up in a list. It's how a doorway gets an address you can say out loud. The same square always gives the same three words, for everyone, forever — nobody assigns them and nobody can buy a nicer one.

Can I unlock by walking past?

No. Walk-throughs don't count — that's the point. The unlock is based on how long you genuinely stay, so a proper coffee earns more than a dash to the loo. Regulars are the people this is built for.

Is this a way for shops to pay customers?

Accepted Answer

No, and it matters that it isn't. A business gives access to software — it never pays money to anyone, never promises anyone a return, and has no idea what your money does. If it worked any other way, every business on the map would be running a financial product, which is exactly what we've built this to avoid.

What's the code on the counter?

Accepted Answer

A QR code or link that opens your visit — public, like a wifi network name, and there's nothing secret about it. It starts the timer and asks your phone whether you're inside. Businesses also have a separate private key for wiring 24-hour Reward Unlocks into their own till software, but that one never goes on display and customers never see it.

What happens when I scan the code?

It opens a web page — no app to install. Your phone asks permission to share its location once, and if you're inside the venue's area a timer starts. Then put your phone away: the timer runs on its own, and when you've stayed long enough you tap to claim your hours. If you scan from the pavement it will tell you you're not inside yet, which is the point.

If two shops are next door, could I unlock the wrong one?

No. The code you scanned decides which spot you're unlocking — the area only confirms you're really there. Areas have to be wider than a shopfront, because indoor GPS drifts 10 to 20 metres, so neighbouring venues genuinely overlap. It makes no difference: standing in one doorway can never unlock the shop next door, because you'd have had to scan their code.

What actually runs when I've unlocked hours?

Your Localmoney agent runs on your own machine, using software by INTENT, for the hours you unlocked. When the hours run out it stops. If you want it running around the clock instead of visit by visit, that's a subscription you take out yourself — nothing to do with the shop.

What does it cost, and does it scale with footfall?

Accepted Answer

A flat monthly fee — £29, £79 or £199 depending on how many people you want unlocking at once. It does not scale with footfall: a busy Saturday costs exactly the same as a quiet Tuesday. Like wifi, you're paying for the capability, not per person.

Question 20

Do I have to understand any of the crypto part?

Accepted Answer

No. You put a code on your counter and draw a circle round your front door. That's your entire involvement. You never hold anyone's money, never handle a wallet and never need an opinion about digital assets.

Where should I put the code?

Accepted Answer

Somewhere people look after they've sat down — the counter, the table, the back of the menu. Not the window: someone scanning from the pavement is told they aren't inside yet, which is a worse first impression than not scanning at all. It's a plain web link, so print it on paper if you like; the free sticker is nicer, not different.

My area overlaps the shop next door — am I paying for their customers?

No. Areas have to be wider than a shopfront because indoor GPS drifts 10 to 20 metres, so on a parade they overlap by design. A customer can only unlock the spot whose code they scanned — the area just confirms they're really there. You're never billed for someone else's visitors, and nobody unlocks your hours by standing outside your neighbour's door.

What do I actually see about my customers?

Counts, never people. How many visits, how long they stayed — the same shape of information a footfall counter gives you. You'll never receive a name, a phone number or anyone's location.

Can I cancel?

Accepted Answer

Any time, yourself, from your manage link. Your spot stays live to the end of the month you've paid for and you're not charged again. After that it comes off the map and the visit information stops. We don't refund the current month, and we don't make you email anyone to leave.
